Hi Everyone,
I try not to bombard you with emails, but it occurred to me that if you’re a free subscriber you might not be aware that this year on The Unspeakable podcast I’m offering bonus content just about every week. That means the guest stays an extra 30 minutes or so—sometimes more—to talk about subjects that are more personal or esoteric than what we covered in the main interview.
I know that this kind of stuff on podcasts can sometimes feel more like outtakes. But I have to say, the bonus content here is excellent. A few people have said it’s even better than the main part of the podcast. I don’t know about that, but hey.
This week’s interview with Freddie DeBoer has some especially good bonus content, so I’ve decided to unlock it so you know what I’m talking about. Here it is.
There’s so much more where that came from. In January, rhetorics scholar Erec Smith talked about grappling with middle age as an unmarried black professor on a small rural campus and the professional price he’s paid for not toeing the ideological party line. Last week, criminologist Peter Moskos talked about learning to play the autoharp. Sex educator and competitive fighter Richie Hardcore talked about his favorite punk and hardcore bands. And podcaster Paul Gilmartin, for whom nothing is too personal, even got me to talk about some of my relationship proclivities (to a point).
These bonus episodes are available to anyone who subscribes at the mid-tier ($7/month) level or higher. That also gets you access to the essays I’m trying to post more often — like this one — but I honestly think it’s totally worth it for this bonus stuff alone. The episodes will come to you a few days before the public feed goes out and they won’t have that midroll break where I ask for paid subscriptions. Plus you can join the conversation in the comment threads.
Please note that subscribing at the Founding Member level means you can come to monthly unrecorded and off-the-record Zoom hangouts where you can ask me anything you want and I can tell you all sorts of illicit secrets about the guests (to a point). Our next hangout is Sunday, March 19 at 8pm ET.
Please know how grateful I am to you for subscribing at any level. Truly. I just don’t want you to miss the good stuff.
All best,
Meghan
I loved that 90's essay from DoBoer, it was also interesting to hear how he is able to churn out that content, one of the things that holds me back is not having an editor, it literally paralyzes me.
I always love you emails, Meghan! Send away!
And, yes, the bonus content is always worth it! ❤️
